Getting My Mind Right

Malcolm,
Night before a race, many thoughts go through my head. The task at hand and what I must do to execute my plan. Tomorrow, I am running at an AAU track meet down in Concord,NC. I'm competing in the 110 hurdles, 200 and 400 meter dashes. I got plans to break 15 in the 110 hurdles. As for the 400, i plan to make-up for what I didn't accomplish last week; as for the 200, I just want to beat my previous time of 22.80. I'm feeling stronger but not my strongest because i don't want to peak too soon. I just need to stay focused. I saw the performance list, looks to be some great competition. As long as the weather is cooperating I'm going to do my thing!

Training Session 5/29/08

Malcolm
Practice went well to day. After Saturday's race i was feeling good. I knew what i had to work on in order to improve my times. I had hurdles practice to day with my coach, Steven Mcgill. I had to emphasize snapping my leg down in order to get quicker over the hurdle. I felt practice went very well. This is just one of my training methods in order to get faster.

For those who know my story I was not able to run school track. Anyways I had to run 42s with the collegiates until summer track began. I ended up running 13.91...yes that is F.A.T. I'd be in the top 40 if I was in college. But now it summer track and I have to come down 3 inches to 39s. With such a fast time over 42s everybody saying I should run 13.3 or 4. My goal is to run 13.2 to break the american record of 13.30. But its like my dad said...I still got to go out and do it. For 39s it is so important to get back on the ground so I have really been working on being quicker over and in between the hurdle. So coach McGill, who by the way is the most underated coach I have ever seen, decided to start changing up my workouts to focus on running quicker and hurdling quicker. To me, this week of practice was really important. We'll see how everything works out. I'll be at SOME MEET, SOME WHERE are in North carolina. lol.

2008 Durham Striders Developmental Meet

Malcolm
Saturday I ran at the Durham Striders Developmental Meet. I competed in the 110 hurdles, 100 and 400 meter dash in the intermediate age group (ages 15-16). The weather was cooperating and allowed for me to run well. I opened the day with the 110 hurdles. I ran a 15.17(fat) beating my previous PR of 15.77(fat). I got out well and hit the last hurdle keeping me from a sub 15 second time. I then competed in the 100 meter dash. I ran a 11.47 another PR. I feel my start in the 100 is keeping me from running 10 seconds in the 100. I have great top end speed, I need to work on getting there faster. the 400 was last. I was so anxious to run the race because all of the training I had done with my dad. I was feeling a sub 50 time. I had plenty of time to recover after I ran the hundred. when my heat was called, I stepped on the track, set my blocks and got focused. RUNNERS TO YOUR MARK! I got into the blocks and before I could set my right hand, the starter yelled " SET!". that threw me off. POW! the gun was shot, and I wasn't even in the set position. I then got set and took off. I was already 1 to 2 seconds behind the clock. I was running in lane 4, I could see everyone else in the race. I was the last one to reach the 200 meter mark. even though I came out late i stayed focused. Once I reached the 200 meter mark I began to turn in on. By the time I got to the last straight away I was running all-out. I ended up winning the 400 meter dash. i set another PR 51.30. that race showed me that I was capable of running a lot faster than I did. It was a pretty great day. it was a nice way to start the USATF Junior Olympic season.
